Personal Statement

Dear Athletic Recruiters,

At a young age my parents introduced me to sports. My mom had me swimming by the age of three and my earliest memories include watching my dad play softball and hockey and my mom run and play soccer. I remember asking my mom if I could run too, because to me it didn’t seem difficult and was just putting one foot in front of another, unfortunately, she said that I had to wait until I was in kindergarten to race a 5k, so while I waited I raced short distances, played soccer and attended gymnastic classes. They kept me busy, but I never forgot about my mom’s promise of that 5k.

Fast forward to my first 5k, it was Halloween themed, and I wore an elf costume. We walked, we ran, but what I remember the most was getting shoutouts from the crowd. According to my mom, people could not believe that I kept at it and when we approached the finish line everyone went nuts. After that I was hooked, so because there were no run clubs in my area, I signed up for local 5ks with my mom, ran Spartan Races with my dad, and entered the Jersey Girl Triathlon at age 10. Growing up I progressed in soccer where my club experience and endurance helped me make the varsity soccer team as a freshman.

Despite making the varsity soccer team as a freshman, I realized that my passion is long distance running. This past winter track season I excelled in the 1600m and the 3200m. I was part of a relay team that shattered two school records and participated at the state sectional championships. This was further proof that I have the potential to be a college level runner.

In conclusion, I have learned to value teamwork, perseverance, and responsibility. These qualities have aided me both in the classroom and in life. I can’t imagine a life without sport. This is why I’m excited to express my interest in being considered as a potential collegiate athlete on your track and field team.

Thank You,

 Meya Ranges
