I would not consider myself a typical high school athlete. I have had to overcome obstacles both on and off the field. I was diagnosed with a learning disability in third grade that made reading comprehension very difficult for me. However I have never allowed my disability to define me or used my disability as an excuse. I have studied hard, sought out help, and learned to overcome my disability, always making the “A” honor roll and being part of the National Honor Society. I feel my learning disability has aided in shaping me into the high school student athlete I am today. I learned at an early age things do not come easy and you have to work for everything and anything you want. You cannot just sit back and wait for good things to happen.
As a freshman thrower, I was able to compete in all of the select invitationals, as well as having the honor of making districts, and being part of the District IV championship team. I did not place at districts as a freshman, however, I gained experience and knowledge that aided me in staying focused throughout my sophomore year. I experienced ups and downs both on and off of the throwing field, including coming back from a radical knee surgery, that at times made concentrating during my meets difficult. However, because of the experience I gained at districts I was able to overcome all these obstacles and stay focused resulting in placing 2nd at Districts, throwing my PR and missing 1st place by less than 1 foot to an older teammate of mine.
I am looking forward to broadening my personal growth through not only throwing at college, but focusing on my academics, as I know college is a stepping stone to my future. I have my sights set on being an accountant which means I will need to have a pristine academic career while in college. I will strive to become a stronger more disciplined thrower throughout my college career as well as an exceptional academic student as I know my actions not only reflect myself but my team, my coaches, and the school I attend.
