As a freshman, I had the opportunity to play on a state champion basketball team. Winning state was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, because all the time and effort I had spent practicing paid off. The next year came, but our team fell short. We didn’t even make it to state. Accepting the reality that I wasn’t going to state with my team was really hard for me, because I felt like I had given everything I had to the game. Getting beat out was a horrible feeling, but I was much more motivated to do everything I could to ensure that my team and I made it to state the next year.
I’ve also participated in track. As a freshman, I took first place in the 300-meter hurdles and placed in two other events at state. My sophomore year came and I got beat in the 300 hurdles by two seniors. Losing was discouraging because I was ranked first, yet ended up taking third. After working my hardest all season long, I felt frustrated that I hadn’t met my goal; but it lit a fire and determination in me to work even that much harder this coming season. Looking back, I can see how much that loss has helped me. I’ve learned that even if I fall short of my goal, I have nothing to regret if I do my best for myself and my teammates.
Having been given the chance to compete in sports and to do well in them, I know what sacrifices it takes to be good at them. One reason I love volleyball the most out of all the sports I compete in is because volleyball has something that no other sport does. Volleyball is full of ups and downs-- that’s what makes it so intense and fun! I’ve been on teams with teammates who wanted to win, and I’ve been on other teams with people who seemed not to care. I’m so grateful for the competitive teams I’ve played with, because I love to win! Every single game I’ve played in I’ve given it my all; not only for my own satisfaction, but also because I owe it to my team and coaches to do my best every time I step on the court.
