Personal Statement

My name is Selah Brashear and I am a junior. I've been playing volleyball for over nine years and I enjoy it very much.   Prior to playing volleyball, I was a competitive gymnast which taught me a lot about hard work and competition.  After competing in both sports for a few years, I determined that I loved volleyball and wanted to focus on this sport.  My goal is to play volleyball in college and I am willing to work hard to make my dream a reality.

I have been on Varsity for my entire high school volleyball career.  I have been elected as captain of my team for the past two years.  I am so proud of my high school because we have grown so much!  Last year, for the first time in my school's history, we made it to the IAAM championship game.  We did not win, however I earned an All-Conference designation.   This year my team moved up to a more competitive level and we fought hard to make it to the Conference Championship again!  After five sets, we were not victorious but again I am proud of our dedication!  For the second consecutive year I earn All Conference honors!  I am proud of my season stats1; 61 Aces, 152 Kills, 11 Blocks,

I have played on very competitive club teams for over 6 years.  I have earned 3 consecutive bids to the USAV GJNC tournament.  This requires a lot of commitment and dedication.  I enjoy working hard to be able to reach my goals.  Outside of team practice, I also participate in jump and agility training to help me become a stronger, more athletic player.  I am not afraid of hard work and like to see my team succeed.

  • Evaluated at Showcase Camp - Washington D.C. Volleyball on 07/18/2021 by Coach Riley-Bozier of Morgan State University Skillset Overview Technical Abilities - 92 / 100 Serving - Quality toss. Good with accuracy and speed. Makes good use of either a top spin or float serve. Offense - Has a knack for finding the court on the attack, sees the open court, and has the ability to make solid contact. Tactical Abilities - 92 / 100 Vision - Court vision is very good. Constantly checking spacing and court positioning to put herself in a great position to make the play. Defensive Awareness - Understands defensive systems and strategy, shows understanding of positioning and angles. Physical Abilities - 92 / 100 Explosiveness - Great quickness and explosiveness, especially in the first step or two. This will be an asset in all aspects of the game Vertical Leap - Showed a good vertical. Great job with footwork and ability to go get the ball. Mental Abilities - 92 / 100 Coachable - Responds well to coaching. Asked good questions and seemed to enjoy the learning process. Team Player - Great team-first attitude. Was encouraging and supportive to teammates throughout camp. Coach's Comments Great attitude and a pleasure to work with at camp. Her knowledge of the game and work ethic stand out. Her awareness on the court and technical skills help her create opportunities for teammates. As a 2024 grad, she still has time to develop physically and has the potential to become a solid player. Great job with hitting slides and ball control. Decide what level do you want to play in college. You jump well and can swing with power, allow yourself to learn to swing outside or right side. Locate the ball when on offense and defense (overpasses) Have confidence in your serving, it is solid. Understand when to stay in front and hit quick or 3 or hit slides, which is your best swing.
