Since a young age, I’ve played sports. I have played lacrosse, field hockey and swimming (I still hold two swim records at a local club). Even though I was successful at other sports, I found my passion in volleyball. I love the connections with my coaches and teammates and I love the speed and competitiveness of the sport. I knew when I started playing volleyball that I wanted to push myself to play at the college level. I’ve been on the starting line up on my high school Varsity team since freshman year. I play middle for that team, which just won the MHSAA Division 1 State Championship this season. Although I am just shy of 6ft tall, my athleticism and vertical reach in middle have made me competitive against some of the top players in the state. I am quick on my feet vertically and horizontally. In club, my primary position is outside, however I also play right side. I started the ’21 club season filling in as middle for an injured teammate. I’ve been told I’m very coachable. If I don’t know a skill or play, I will learn it quickly. A coach recently told me I was the “team’s Swiss Army knife” because of my ability learn and execute in multiple positions and easily transition between them. I love a fast paced offense and will play in any hitting position that helps my team succeed.
As a student, I excel in the classroom. I attend one of the top high schools in the state and take a rigorous curriculum. While playing a high level sport throughout the year, I’ve maintained a 4.3 grade point average. I am independently responsible, great at time management and prioritizing my class work. I would like to continue beyond high school at a higher academic institution, where I can contribute to my teams academic successes. I am interested in Business and Finance as my future career path.
In my personal time, I have been an assistant volleyball coach for a seventh grade middle school team for the past two years. I like teaching the girls volleyball and watching their reactions when they score. It’s fun encourage these players and see how much they grow in the game from the first practice to the final season game.
In addition to working on my sport performance physically, I also work on the mental side of my game with a mindset coach. I believe having strong sports mindset in a game is just as important as physical skill. Playing at a high level brings added pressure. I’ve learned how to maintain my focus and mental toughness. I take one play at a time, and stay present in the moment. I was honored recently to be a featured guest on a Rising Champions podcast for Champion Mindset Group for my successes in the ’20 high school season. You can listen to my interview at this link www.champmindset.com. (Rising Champions Podcast Episode #38. Interview begins at 8:44 in the podcast).
I have been raised in a sports minded family. My dad played college hockey and lacrosse and actively coaches two varsity golf teams (one of which has won States back to back). My sister is a two-time golf State Champion and plans to play in college next year. I know through my sport, I am gaining valuable life lessons for my future. I hope to continue my volleyball at the next level and contribute to the performance and academic success of another program.
