“Though she be but little, she is fierce” W. Shakespeare
I was in third grade when I went to my first grade 3-8 grade volleyball camp. I was the only third grader in the land of the 8th grade giants. Although it was terrifying and I was the worst one, I fell in love with the game and the desire to succeed in this sport was born. In 7th grade, I became a setter and it was like a switch turned on. My confidence soared while playing because I knew that the second contact was mine! Even though I may not be the tallest, my quickness and urgency to get the second ball makes up for what I might lack in height!
As my parents will testify, I did and still do go to every camp, practice, and lesson I can to improve my skills and strengthen my technique. I also love the strategy and complexities of the actual game, especially at the varsity level. I strive to deliver the perfect set and play defense with accurate ball placement each and every time I’m on the court. And serving is so fun – maybe that’s where the quote from Shakespeare reminds me of myself most of all. I believe I have an unexpected, fierce serve and I love to place the ball, especially while short serving!
On and off the court, I may not be the loudest or most charismatic, but I’m an encourager and a calming presence. I lead by intentional words and actions to support my team. I’m dependable, loyal, and trustworthy both on and off the court. I try each day to be a person of integrity, whether in volleyball, school, or anything else I do. Overriding my love of volleyball though, is my love for Jesus. My love for the game and skills to play come from my Creator and I thank Him for it. Any success or failure I’ve had at volleyball is under His divine control and in the end, I want to bring Him glory through the gift of letting me play volleyball.
