My name is Maria Famularo. I am currently 16 years old and attend Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Pontiac, Michigan. I had played basketball and volleyball when I was younger but decided to play only volleyball when I was in the 7th grade. I am totally committed to Volleyball as my sport. In the summer I play a lot of sand volleyball and love it. I also train on a regular basis, both individually with a private trainer as well as with a group of great players. I also take school very serious. I am very proud of my GPA currently at 3.9., & my ACT score 31.
This past high school season my High School team won then 2017 Michigan State Championship and had a record of 64-2-2. We even were rated #8 in the nation by Prep Volleyball! I am so proud of our team. Our school has had a long history of success in volleyball over the years this year was no different. I was fortunate to be a key contributor to the team's success. Because we had such great players, our practices were so challenging that the games sometimes were easier than practice!
I also play for the Unified 17 – 1 National team. I am excited for the season. We added four new girls which I know will help us greatly. We just finished our first tournament, the Rock and Rumble in Cleveland and we played well. Because of injuries to our two OH's my coach asked me to play OH (6 rotations). I was happy to do it and I liked the challenge. The weekend was a great success and I played very well. I am going to be playing OH for at least two more tournaments. Once our girls get healthy it will be back to Libero for me.
One of the things that I am most proud of is my leadership, not just on the court but at school as well. I have a great attitude and am very vocal with my teammates. Being Libero requires me to talk loud and direct our players. I must have earned their trust because they definitely listen to me. My coach felt that my leadership skills were so strong that she invited me to attend a Women's Leadership Conference. I was honored to be chosen. This season my high school coach also told me that I was the most “mentally strong” player on the team and that I am the "glue" that holds us together. Being mentally strong is so important in sports and I am proud that my coach recognized this in me. Mostly I just enjoy being a great teammate. In my opinion, there is no greater sport than volleyball!
