Hello, my name is Avery Lewis and I am in the graduating class of 2023 with a current GPA of 3.9. I am a Middle blocker at Maumee High School and this is my third year on a National team with the Toledo Volleyball Club. I started volleyball in the 8th grade, which is later than most of my peers. Prior to volleyball, I was heavily involved in Martial Arts, where I had an opportunity to compete against world-class athletes in Black-Belt divisions of kata, weapons (nunchucks), and point fighting (kick-boxing). I competed all over the United States and qualified for Worlds twice. The aspects of karate are different than any sport I have ever participated in. Karate taught me everything I know about being an athlete. It taught me about dedication, perseverance, and determination. My Sensei motivated me every day to improve and push myself harder than ever before, especially when things got challenging. The lessons I learned through Martial Arts provided me with a solid foundation, allowing me to grow as an athlete physically as well as emotionally. I have learned to manage my time well, practicing my footwork every chance I get, striving to get stronger and faster. That also includes putting work, in all aspects of life, including school and who I am as a person. Education always comes first as succeeding in school is very important to me. As a junior, I was elected Student Council Secretary, I'm involved in a volunteer club called Interact and I am a DECA and Marketing member. I would like to either become a psychologist or a criminal defense attorney and I plan to work hard for those dreams to come true. I consider myself a well-rounded person and I am always looking for opportunities and experiences that will allow me to grow. Aside from Martial Arts, I participated in several different sports when I was younger. And then someone put a volleyball in my hands...
When I started volleyball I quickly fell in love, knowing right away that THIS is the sport I've been preparing for. When I'm on the court the world around me is silent. I am one hundred percent focused on the game. I always want to perform my absolute best and can be hard on myself at times but I take constructive criticism well and strive to make needed corrections. I have a lot of energy and I fully support and encourage my teammates. When I'm out there you can see my love and passion for the game and I am ready for the responsibilities for becoming a college athlete.
