Hi, my name is Sophie Breitenbach, and I am in the graduating class of 2022 at Rogers High School in Newport, Rhode Island.
I have been playing volleyball since I was in 5th Grade. I started playing club volleyball when I was 13 for Tribe Volleyball in South Florida. I played with Tribe for 2 years as an opposite and gained a lot of valuable tournament experience with a heavy travel schedule taking us to Orlando and Chicago tournaments.
Our family moved to Rhode Island in 2018 when I started my Freshman year at Rogers High School. Ever since my Freshman year I have been a starter on varsity as an opposite. I was a key player in bringing our D3 team to win State Championship and earning the MVP award for D3 and I was an All-State Player of the Year Nominee in 2018. In 2019, we unfortunately lost in the semi-finals, so I am very hopeful of a possible season and to bring my team to the state championships again. In spring 2020, our Covid-19 season came to an unfulfilling end. We made it all the way to the state championship again, but we just fell short of winning, and we came in 2nd place. In my senior season, we started off strong by moving up to DII. We finished the regular season 20-1 and in play-offs we defeated our only loss in the State Championship. Finishing off my high school career with another state championship was the best thing that I could've ask for.
In the school off-season, I play for South County Juniors Volleyball Club in North Kingston, Rhode Island. Currently, I am a right-side hitter on the 18-1 Open team for my club. This is my third season with South County Volleyball Club, and all three years the teams I have been on have all been extremely successful finishing as one of the best teams in New England. This year, I will be playing on South County 18-1 Blue, and will be traveling to Capitol Hill Classic in DC and the Boston Tournament.
At school, I am very near the top of my class with a GPA of 3.9. I am enrolled in all honors and 4 AP classes this year, including AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Psychology. I strive to be the best in my class and push myself even if it means doing extra work outside of school to reach my best potential. My goal is to pursue a career in the medical field and study at a rigorous school, as well as play collegiate volleyball. My strongest classes are math and chemistry.
As well as High School volleyball, I also participate in track and field during the winter and sailing in the spring. One way or another I am always focusing on improving my game and personal fitness to be the best I can be in volleyball.
During the summer, I like to do at least 2 volleyball camps, I also play beach volleyball, I sail and I have a part-time job in a local restaurant. It’s important to me to stay motivated and active. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 this year I was unable to participate in many camps, but I continued to do beach volleyball. On my school team as well as my club team, I am a natural leader and team player. I encourage and pick my teammates up while staying focused mentally and strategically, doing everything I can to improve in the sport.
