Seven years ago, I tried out for my first volleyball club team and this when is I knew I wanted volleyball to be a part of my life. Playing volleyball has taught me how to set goals, work toward my goals, and to gain confidence as an athlete. As I start planning for college, I want volleyball and my academics to be a part of the plan.
When I started playing volleyball, I was the shortest and least experienced on my team. I started playing in the back row and serving underhanded, the first year I learned the basics of volleyball and had a blast. I did learn to serve overhand, my parents and my team cheered as if I won the Super Bowl, and now can stand or jump serve. In addition to playing back row defense, I have played as a setter and outside hitter. My current position is opposite hitter but this last club season I have played and trained in all front row positions as a hitter and blocker. I do have to say, there is no better feeling than blocking a hit for a point.
When the school volleyball season and club volleyball season are over, I continue to train. I work with my club coach on my vertical jump, hitting, blocking, recovering a potential blocked hit, serve receive, and my serves. I also try to join in group sessions to work with other players and continue to develop my team skills. I also workout 2-3 times a week outside of school for strength and agility.
The strength training helped work on my core and allowed me to be a multisport athlete, competing in volleyball and pole vault. This year I made the Freshman Volleyball Team, was the starting opposite hitter, and received the Fighting Heart award. Our team was undefeated and won District. In pole vault, I was on the Junior Varsity team and received third place in Junior Varsity 4-5a District Meet.
High school has also been a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in academics. This year, I am taking all PreAP classes and will begin AP/Dual Credit next year. Academics has really become a focus. In the 8th Grade I won the State Science Fair for Biomedical Engineering Junior Division. The state science fair was held on a college campus, I was able to tour the Veterinary School. Being on a college campus and learning more about veterinary medicine, I knew I was all in on becoming a veterinarian.
Outside of volleyball and academics, I still have time to dedicate to my community. I serve in my church as well as volunteering with multiple nonprofit organizations. My freshman year, I achieved my goal of serving 50 hours in various charities in my community. I have been able to serve at a local soup kitchen, animal shelter, deliver meals to homes, and much more.
As I plan for college and my future career, my goal is to combine the opportunity to play volleyball and the opportunity to start studying to become a veterinarian. Being a student at a university, a team player in volleyball, and achieving a 4.0 is my ultimate next step in the future.
