Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Suzan Chappuie. Water polo is my passion! I have played water polo competitively for both club and high school for the past six years. I play utility as my primary and center as my secondary position. As a leader, I push those around me to perform their best and hold myself accountable to achieve goals. From schooling to sports, I have a strong work ethic. In the water, I am highly competitive, focused, and versatile. Moreover, I am confident in my ability to succeed at the collegiate level. Academically, I am advanced in both math and sciences. I have always had an eye for the arts and consider myself highly creative. I enjoy challenging my own thinking. I look forward to helping my university succeed in its water polo program by inspiring teammates, working hard with coaches and players, and positively representing my school in and out of the pool.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Junior Olympics 2022
  • 7/21/22 to 7/24/22
  • This tournament was one of my best and most memorable. I played four days straight, every minute, and with no breaks. The grind conditioned me mentally and physically. My coach, Gabby, was my advocate. She pushed me to be exceptional and stay mentally tough. She knew I could handle the pressure, even if I were unsure. I learned to keep myself mentally composed even when everything seemed to go wrong. Physically, I pushed myself to my absolute maximum by playing eleven games. I learned I have a passion and drive to succeed at water polo. I was exhausted and burnt out, but I never gave up or fell apart. Above all, I learned we win and lose as a team.
  • Camp/Event
  • Santa Cruz day Tournament
  • 7/09/22 to 7/09/22
  • Although it was only a one-day tournament, I found the day extraordinary. We won first place in the highest division without four starting players and with our having to pull up players from other American River teams. It was challenging but rewarding. With only one other starter, I played all three games. We adapted quickly to our new team members playing styles while also infusing our winning drive in our junior players. There was no preparation in advance working with the other girls, yet we all pulled through. It's an important tournament to recall because we succeeded above all odds, rapidly learned one another's playing styles, and worked extremely hard in a challenging situation.
  • Camp/Event
  • Stanford Winter Water Polo Camp
  • 12/18/21 to 12/20/21
  • I made All-League Team Two as a varsity player in my sophomore year of high school. Stanford invited me to its winter training camp. I played for three days with fellow athletes from high schools and clubs across the country. It was a truly memorable experience. The Stanford coaches were fantastic and taught me many invaluable techniques to play at the college level. From coaching tips to helping boost my confidence, my Stanford mentors inspired me to work hard and be personally accountable to my teammates to push myself. Above all, I learned about the collegiate atmosphere, which further fuelled my ambition to play at the next level.

Training

  • Weight lifting
  • 2 years
  • To become a stronger center, I got into weight lifting. Over freshman to sophomore year, I worked with my high school coach, Morgan Jones. She is a physical trainer and helped me learn basics in lifting. My sophomore physical education class was weight training based. I gradually grew stronger in there from weightlifting three times a week. It helped me gain strength physically, as well it taught me more advanced lifting techniques. From there, I kept going up in how much weight I could lift all around. I still weight lift two to three times a week in high school season, but I increase my days in the gym when it is club water polo season.
