Personal Statement

My name is Rio and I am currently a junior in high school (graduating year 2020) and plan to attend a college where I can study either an environmentally related major or chemical engineering.  I am a dedicated individual in the classroom and in the pool, where I enjoy pushing myself to improve every day.  As a freshman I beat the varsity goalie record for number of saves within a season and made the Lansing State Journal dream team.  My sophomore year I joined my high school's swim team and received a CAAC honorable mention and during the water polo season I was recognized by the Lansing State Journal once again, placed on their Dream Team and winning Female Water Polo Player of the Year along with an all-state honorable mention.  My height is 5' 10'' and my wingspan is currently 5' 10''.  I play both field and goal positions in water polo, but mainly I am a goalie.  Below are some of the awards I have received, swim times, and activities in which I participate.


Academic Awards:

2017-2018 Outstanding Academic All-American, CAAC All Academic Award (received 3x), Academic All-Area (received 2x) Academic All-State, National Academy of Scientists and Technologists Award of Excellence


Athletic awards and recognition:

OHS 2017 Most valuable player, LSJ Dream Team (2x), 2018 LSJ Female Water Polo Player of the Year, MWPA All-State honorable mention (2018), captain of water polo team, swim and dive honor roll for four weeks in a row, top ten highest save percentages at Okemos High School


Activities and Extracurricular Notes:

United in social progress team (diversity team), camp counselor at local nature center, volunteer volleyball coach for middle school students, swim coach at Haslett community pool, student council committee chair, former member of high school writing club, ACTION (volunteering club), member of the National Honor Society, certified Red Cross lifeguard

  • Preseason training for two clubs (Raptor water polo and spartan water polo) held during the winter time. During fall (September-early november) participated on the varsity swim team. Summer practice was though the spartan water polo junior olympic team. Currently preseason conditioning with Raptor and Spartan water polo, along with keeping up my swim skills through MMA Hurricanes club swim team.
