As a kid, my parents enrolled me in Taekwondo in hopes I would learn a little bit of self-defense and have some fun. Little did they know I would fall in love with the sport. I ended up practicing the Korean style martial art for 10 years, and in the process, earned my third-degree black belt and took home 10 state championship titles in point and continuous sparring. However, not only did I find a love for martial arts but for combat sports. I told my parents I wanted to go to a middle school that would let girls wrestle and I was lucky enough to find one. I started out as a mere 85-pound 6th grader with no prior experience. I think I only won two matches that entire year. However, I went back the next year and again the year after that and managed to take 4th my 8th-grade year at the district tournament.
I found quite a bit of success my freshman year. This was the year the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) implemented a pilot program for women's wrestling. This program paved the way for the now sanctioned version. In my sophomore year, I qualified for the unofficial girl's state wrestling tournament at 136 pounds and I took 6th. This ended up being the first time I kind of thought about taking my wrestling to the collegiate level. In my junior year, I was almost not granted a season despite the fact it ended up being the first year it was a sanctioned CHSAA sport. Luckily, we were able to have a season and with that, I claimed the title of regional champion and state runner-up.
This year, I am hoping to claim the title of state champion and continue my wrestling career in college.
