My name is Louis Gray Ortis but I go by Gray. I am the third of five children. I began wrestling as a 5 or 6 year old and fell in love with the sport early on. I was able to wrestle varsity as an 8th grader and competed well with older wrestlers. I finished my 8th grade year with a record of38-18. I won my weight class in the first tournament of that season and I routinely placed in most tournaments that year.
As a freshman, I went 39-10 and missed becoming a state qualifier by losing in UTB to a senior that was ranked number two in the weight class. I was determined to qualify as a sophomore, so the morning after I lost out at Sectionals, I began my drive to become the best I could be. I worked extremely hard and as a sophomore, I won Sectionals and went in to the State tournament as the number four seed. I ran the table and as a 138 pound sophomore, I upset the number one seed and Senior in the semifinals and went on to win the State title. I finished my sophomore year with a record of 46-6.
During my junior season, I suffered a shoulder strain that kept me out for five weeks leading up to State. Due to Covid, there were no Sectionals this year. I ended the year with a record of 32-2 and finished third in State.
Currently, I am in my senior year and ranked number one in the the state of Alabama in the 5-6A classification in the 160pound division. My record is 43-1 as of today. I currently hold my high school teams records in career wins, pins, and should have the takedown record by season's end. My current high school record is 198-39. Again 18 of those 39 losses occurred as an 8th grader.
I am an extremely disciplined and hard worker. I am good teammate and work really well with others. I didn't start off season wrestling until a few years ago and know that I have a lot to learn, but also have a tremendous upside. Academically, I wish to pursue psychology and eventually get a Master's Degree and become a counselor.
