My name is Taylor Lazarus-Jaureguy and I wrestle for Agoura High School in Southern California. I began my wrestling career as a sophomore and I accomplished many things. Within my first month of wrestling, my coaches took me to a varsity tournament in South Torrance. Even though I went 0-2, I exceeded their expectations. Throughout the season, I earned two 1st place, three 2nd place, three 3rd place, and one 4th place medal(s). I also placed 3rd in the Marmonte League at 184 lbs and went to Southern Section CIF. My team mates voted me Rookie of the Year. I was able to accomplish this without a proper wrestling room; our room and mats were destroyed by rain around mid December. This forced us to practice at other schools, share a room with our dance team, and eventually we had to set up mats in our outdoor cafeteria. This year hasn't been much different as we still don't have a dedicated wrestling room. I am still working hard and pushing myself to be able to place at CIF this year and go beyond to Masters. Some of the ways I am working to accomplish these goals are by wearing a 15 lb weight-vest and an elevation mask during team conditioning sessions. I workout at home on weekdays and on weekends when we don't have tournaments, I go lift at my MMA gym. Somehow I always find a way to get strength training in whether that is squeezing a tennis ball during class or doing push-ups, pull-ups, and squats before I go to sleep. This past season i placed third in Coastal Canyon league and made it to second of CIF.
Some extracurricular activities I take part in are Sports Medicine and Los Angeles County Junior Lifeguards at Zuma Beach. In my Sports Medicine class we are taught how to: tape different joints, splint broken bones, and identify injuries. At Junior Lifeguards they teach us how to spot out rip currents, how to tell if someone is putting themselves in danger before they get injured, and how to rescue them. They also teach us CPR and how to do line-searches for submerged victims. The instructors put us through intense sessions of running in soft sand, swimming through big surf, and combinations of both. Some things I would bring to a team are tenacity, ridiculous work ethic, and stunning resiliency. When I am not in wrestling season I train gi and no-gi Jiu-Jitsu as well as Kickboxing at Bas Rutten’s Elite MMA Gym.
I taught myself to play the guitar and ukulele. Some of my favorite songs to play are Hotel California by The Eagles, The Messenger by Linkin Park, and Dust in the Wind by Kansas. I enjoy snowboarding, surfing, and hiking in our local mountains with friends and family. I enjoy taking lots of picture while doing these activities.
My ultimate goal is to become a Firefighter/Paramedic as well as a Personal Trainer. I plan on majoring in Kinesiology and Exercise Science in order to help me obtain this goal. I know the road will be challenging, but with my work ethic and the love and support of my friends and family, I will be successful.
