"I like to hurt people" is my typical response when I am asked why I wrestle. The truth is I enjoy being a part of a sport the requires me to train hard both physically and mentally.
When I was in the eighth grade, I made a pact with a friend if they would run cross country with me in the fall I would wrestle in the winter. Like most first time wrestlers, I didn't have a clue what I was doing. As the season went on, I won my matches and taking first place in the 145 weight class at league finals. Freshmen year was a different battleground, I only won two of my matches. Sophomore year, I did better with a 6-6 season. This year, my junior year, I made the varsity team. I had my best season so far and made my personal goal of making it to the second day of North Coast Sectional (NCS).
As much as wrestling is an individual sport, I believe having a strong and supportive team can make a huge difference. I rely on my teammates to bring their best to each practice, meet and tournament, which motives me to do the same. This past season my high school team was undefeated, won the league championship for the first time in the history of the school and sent twelve of the fourteen varsity squad to NCS, where we placed eighth as a team. Being on the team has taught me the value of teamwork and the importance that each member plays. I enjoy encouraging my fellow teammates to reach their goals. I'm looking for a program that will allow me to continue to grow as a wrestler as well as being a part of something bigger than myself.
