To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter in recommendation of Hunter Shawback for your program. I have known Hunter for the past three years and have had the opportunity to have both a teacher-student and coach-athlete relationship with Hunter. His ability and willingness to learn, be reflective, and be open to varying viewpoints in the classroom and in the athletic realm make him highly coachable.
While a student of mine Hunter worked hard to complete his work and succeed on tests and projects even while quarantined at home. When working on group projects Hunter would be a great partner and work well with others.
As Hunter’s wrestling coach, he has shown to be dedicated to his growth both on and off the mat. When I first met Hunter in his sophomore year he weighed almost 300 lbs, was unhealthy, and had not wrestled since fifth grade. At the end of his junior year Hunter decided to get serious about his fitness and nutrition to get back into wrestling for his senior year. He came into his senior wrestling season around 200 lbs and worked extremely hard get down to fill an empty varsity spot at 182 lbs. With only 17 athletes on a top-heavy roster, this sacrifice was essential for our team to fill out a competitive lineup and contributed directly to our team regional championship. Despite being away from the sport for almost seven years and missing several competitions due to illness and minor injury, Hunter worked himself to a varsity position at a tough weight class, qualified for sectionals, and was the sixth highest scorer on the team. What impressed me was Hunter’s drive to improve and to find a way to win. He could rarely be counted out of tough match and continued to get better each week. I believe that he has not yet come close to reaching his full potential.
Hunter’s competitiveness, willingness to learn, sacrifice for the team and dedication to his growth make him an asset to any team. I hope that you consider him. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
