From the moment I stepped on the mat, eleven years ago, I knew wrestling would be one of the most important aspects of my life. Wrestling is not only a sport to me; I have learned more than the technique and style. The mat is where I learned what it takes to be part of a team; I have learned respect, for myself, my teammates, my coaches and my opponents. I have developed humility, whether I walk of as a victor or in second place, I keep my head up and become determined to learn from my errors and go out the following match smarter, stronger and hungry for pride.
I take what I have absorbed on the mat and apply these life lessons to my daily life. With the leadership role I have developed on my team, I strive to be a positive role model and watch as each teammate readies for their next battle, observing their technique, coaching and encouraging them and shaking their hands as they walk of the mat, reminding them to hold their head up high.
My role as a leader has also worked its way into my personal life; I demonstrate leadership in the classroom, community, home and social life. I have made a name among my peers and elders as a well-mannered and respectful young man. Although school is not my strongest area, I work hard to set academic goals for myself and strive to achieve them.
Any institution I am lucky enough to be a part of, will equally be fortunate for having me on their team; my loyalty is wide and my hunger for pride runs deep.
