1) AREA CODE RECOMMENDATION - In February 2019, Atlanta Braves Area Scout Kevin Martin recommended me for Area Code tryouts, and I submitted my application.
2) INDEPENDENT SHOWCASE ANALYSIS – I and 38 other players were invited to participate in the L.A. Identifier at East Los Angeles College on May 30, 2018. Prep Baseball Report's Scout Blog by Les Lukach & Steve Doherty listed me as an event standout (https://www.prepbaseballreport.com/news/CA/Los-Angeles-Identifier-Notes-4295830167?r=/california/news-listing), included video of my BP swing, and noted: "Ogrin is a grinding player shows well at shortstop but projects as a second baseman at the next level. Ogrin shows flashes of pop in the bat which may foretell of power gains in the future, but for now he's a gap-to-gap on the line drives guys who can occasionally run into one. His defensive actions are smooth and consistent and he shows enough arm from the left side. At the plate he flashes hand speed with good barrel control on a level path. His back shoulder dips a bit at times." In the game, Sean hit 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 run, and 1 walk.
3) MY GOALS – My brother Scott and I have always loved this game, and we want to play for as long as possible. Scott was a 2016 MLB draft pick (Twins) and starts at second base for Cal Poly SLO. Even these days, we’ll finish a double-header, then run out to play whiffle ball with our friends. Our family always emphasized love for the game. We realize that very few players ever make the Majors, but it’s sure fun trying. I will play college ball, and maybe beyond.
4) MY VALUE – It may sound funny, but my personality and character are very important to me. I’ve been told that I’m the heart of the team who brings everyone together, maintains an atmosphere of fun and comradery, and who adds plenty of intensity when it counts. I have a very high baseball IQ, and am a leader on the field who constantly communicates situations and support to my teammates. Also, my coaches tell me that I have an excellent feel for the game, get strong jumps on balls in play, and have a great internal clock.
5) MY POWER POTENTIAL – Since we were never huge kids growing up, our parents raised us to have big hearts and skills, and if we get big, that’s a bonus. Although my brother never hit a homer in youth baseball, he’s now a 6’1” 220-pound power hitter at Cal Poly. I lift and hit incessantly to improve my skills as much as possible.
6) MY ACADEMICS – Currently, my GPA is right around 3.2. I feel like, until this semester, I’ve been giving more attention to baseball than grades, and believe that my grades are a reflection of my effort, versus intellect. As of February 2019, I am doing very well in Algebra II/Trigonometry and Honors Anatomy. After college, my father obtained an MBA and a law degree, and has been a practicing litigation and trial attorney for 29 years. However, he set plenty of time aside to coach our youth sports teams. My mother attended the USC School of Dentistry, and my brother is working on his business degree at Cal Poly before this year’s MLB draft. My family motivates me to work harder on my academics, which I will continue to do.
