Personal Statement

Dear Coach

Thank you for taking a moment to evaluate me for a position on your team. I'm searching for an opportunity to join a program where I contribute to the team's success. Here are some points where I will be a standout contributor to your team.

Work Ethic: In the last four years, I have trained year-round to be a successful pitcher. Almost every day of every week, I was working on strength, mechanics, flexibility, nutrition, and mental game. Cold weather, in the dark, no mounds open. It didn't matter I put in the work. Many times, I was pitching or throwing to my dad and often, for months; we were the only people on the baseball diamond working. Hard work and dedication are the only way I know how to be a pitcher. I will bring that same burning desire and no-quit effort to your team.

Coachability: Pitching is a difficult thing to master. It was more difficult because my body was always changing. I learned early that in youth baseball, there are a lot of trainers who make promises they can't keep. I've been fortunate in the having the coaches and trainers I've had.  Now, looking at the next level in my baseball life, I'm anxious and eager to get training and coaching from the quality of staff that I know you have.

Mental Maturity: When i first started getting serious about pitching I studied mechanics of every baseball pitcher. I worked on mechanics, rotation, arm slot and leg push-off. My mechanics got better and that's when I also learned that mechanics alone don't make a pitcher. There's a whole world around the mental approach to pitching that I am aware of. Some people call it toughness, some people call it discipline, some people call it focus.  Whatever you call it, this is where I am now soaking up as much understanding as I can. My mechanics are good but they're not enough. I want to be on the mound, feeling certain that I will dominate any batter at the plate.

Team Player and Leader: The role of the picture is central on a team. But even when I'm not pitching, I take the lead in cheering on my teammates, the pitcher on the mound, the batter, and especially those that are having a hard time.  Positive words from your teammate are a powerful tool and I think more than being a team player that makes me a team leader. A leader is not a boss. A leader is someone who leads by example and says "Let's do this" ! I create positive  energy on the field and and in the clubhouse.  Having said that, losing I’s NOT okay!  As a leader l make my feelings clear about competing to win.

Academic Commitment: Academics are important to me, and I'm dedicated to maintaining a strong academic record while balancing my commitment to baseball. I am going to college to get an education; I want to play baseball and I can only do both by being dedicated to academics and to baseball.

I hope for an opportunity to meet with you in person and show you who I am and what I stand for. Thank you again for taking the time to consider me and if I am a good fit for your program.

Sincerely,

Ethan Talbert

Training

  • 3 years
  • Started regular training with my first Pitching coach. Learned many valuable lessons. Athletically the value of a strong right leg push-off He trained me in the full wind-up. To this day I have never faced a pitcher that delivered from the full wind-up. I learned the value of a year-round work ethic. He taught me that every pitch has the potential to win or lose a game. For that reason every pitch I go 100%.
