Personal Statement

Hello- My name is Michael Machamer. I am currently a senior and attend Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein, IL. I am 6’-1’’ and weigh 185 LBS. I hit and throw from the right hand side. My primary positions are pitching, right field, and third base.  Additionally, I have played many games at 2nd base, 1st base, and left field. My versatility playing so many positions well, sets me apart from other players, as does my high baseball IQ, ability to anticipate, excellent vision, and great reflexes.

Since I was young, I have always loved the game of baseball, and I think about it constantly. If it were not for my coaches and especially my parents encouragement, I would not be the player I am today.  They work me and teach me.  Every time I practice, workout, or play in a game, I learn something new that I try to apply the next time.

In the off-season, I practice baseball typically 5-6 days a week, take private hitting and pitching lessons, and workout on a daily basis. My goal is to improve my numbers and improve on my weaknesses. When my coach instructs me to try something new or to do something different during a practice or lesson, I can adjust accordingly.

Over the last few seasons, I have been developed into a starting pitcher role. On the mound, I am efficient and last many innings with low pitch counts. I throw a fastball, curveball, and a changeup with very good control. I am capable of locating all of my pitches to their specific destinations and I don't give up many walks .  After a pitch is thrown, I become a good fielder when it comes down to either fielding a bunt or a grounder hit to either side of me. My pickoff moves are smooth and quick to each of the bases. One of my biggest assets as a pitcher is calmness and focus in tough situations. I work with both my mental and physical strengths on the mound.

As a hitter, I always contribute to my team’s success. I consistently get hits, put the ball in play, score runs, and move guys over. Since I work deep in the counts, most of my at-bats are quality. I am a good situational hitter because I know how I need to execute in order to get the job done. As a base runner, I steal many bases because of my lateral speed and ability to read the pitcher and get a good jump.

As a fielder, I play many positions well. In the outfield, I have the ability to read the angle and take the best route to the ball. I also have good arm strength, so I can throw runners out at any base. In the infield, I have a quick first step off the bat and can get to the ball quickly.  I always give 110% effort to make a play when the ball comes in my direction and to keep the ball in front. I like all positions equally, and my coaches are comfortable playing me wherever I am needed most in the game situation.

I am extremely motivated to play baseball in college. I want to play under experienced coaches, utilize my talent at the collegiate level, and continue to learn the game.

Thank you for taking your time to read my personal statement. I look forward to hearing from you.
