I’ve been playing baseball since I was five, but my love for the game really all started in little league. Hitting homeruns was then and still is my favorite thing to do. After my last year of majors, the field got bigger, the fence was farther. I needed to get better. I began to lift weights and run drills to condition myself. I immediately started to see a difference in my performance and strength. I was hitting and throwing the ball harder and farther. This made me want to keep doing what I was doing and to this day I still strive to keep improving with every practice, every drill, every swing.
I have learned a lot about myself playing baseball. As a younger player, my competitiveness would get the better of me whenever anyone out performed me, including my teammates. Over the years I have come to realize that baseball isn’t a one-man sport. It has to be played with and as a team. No matter how hard I hit the ball, how many times I catch a ball or throw a runner out, it is my teammate on the other end that catches my throw, makes the tag, cheers me on when I have a hit or picks me up when I fail. Alone I may be strong, but together we are stronger. And I am stronger because of my team.
To get to where I am today, I have pushed myself to the point of exhaustion, putting forth my best effort and always challenging myself to get better. One more rep, one more bucket, one more sprint. And I carry it over into my schooling. Giving that extra hour of studying, doing that paper for extra credit, challenging myself with honors classes. I love to compete whether it be in baseball, academically, fishing or playing ping pong with my family. I look forward to the next couple years of my high school career.
