Professional Goals. I believe that humanity possesses the capacity to achieve the greatness that would attend an end to world hunger, extreme poverty, pandemics, the threat of nuclear war, and the destruction of our environment. I am convinced that we can master evolving technologies, like artificial intelligence, and make people everywhere beneficiaries, rather than victims, of technological advance. On the other hand, we also possess the means to our own destruction. So, we are the stewards of a future that extends in time far beyond what we, ourselves, will see with choices that will profoundly affect people who will inhabit that future. I aspire to a life’s work spent in the service of making a positive difference in how those choices are made and implemented.
Educational Goals. Recognizing that there are many ways to make a meaningful contribution, I am intrigued by how one goes about making human systems work effectively. Central to optimizing human systems is possessing the ability to derive useful information from large, diverse data caches, an endeavor that makes use of advances in data science, such as machine learning. Using this information to build models of human systems (such as economies, health care delivery, and climate change) that facilitate their optimization is critical to achieving the goals set out above. Hence, I plan to devote my college (and likely graduate school) years to gaining a grounding in operations research, data science, and financial structures.
Baseball Goals. From baseball I learned how to work effectively towards a distant goal, the importance of teams working together to achieve success that would be inaccessible to people not collaborating, and the joy of succeeding. I also really enjoy high level competition. My goal is to play college baseball, working hard to maximize my contribution to an NCAA team being a winner. I believe that I can contribute as a position player and hitter and I also have a great deal of very successful pitching experience. By participating on an NCAA baseball team I would greatly refine my expertise in all of the technical aspects of baseball, something that I really want to accomplish. Most of all, I love the game and, for me, playing on an NCAA team would just plain be a lot of fun.
