In a recent article in our local newspaper "30 SouthCoast high school baseball players to watch in the 2022 MIAA playoffs" Head Coach, Brian Rose (former Red Sox pitcher) described my contributions this season as follows: "Head coach Brian Rose called Jones, a junior catcher, the “cornerstone for our pitching staff," as he has caught every inning of every game this year."
Personal Statement:
I am a senior at Bishop Stang High School and have been the starting catcher on the Varsity baseball team since my Sophomore year. I am looking for opportunities to continue my education and baseball career in college at the very highest level after I graduate in 2023.
As a sophomore in 2021, I became the starting catcher on the Varsity baseball team early in the season when our senior catcher got hurt. I started fifteen of eighteen games, batted fourth in the lineup and led the pitching staff and team, helping us get to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. As a result of my accomplishments I was nominated by my coach, former Red Sox pitcher Brian Rose, for league rookie of the year.
An article in the Boston Globe highlighted our teams success and my contributions
I also played travel ball with Team Boston 17U as a junior, playing in very competitive events at PG and PBR championships. At the end of the season I was selected by my team to attend the Perfect Game Underclass National Championship in Fort Myers Florida.
Some other great successes included significant progress after my Sophomore year into my Junior year in my skills due to my work ethic, that my coaches can confirm, and a comprehensive off season training program. Significant improvements included Pop Time of 1.92 from 2.2, Exit Velocity of 91 from 77, and a 60 Yard Dash of 6.91 from 7.37.
In addition, I achieved strength training personal bests with lifts of: 300lbs for barbell front loaded split squat (Nov 2020 Age 15), 335lbs for barbell back loaded split squat (Jan 2021 Age 16), 300 pound front foot elevated barbell split squat lift (February 2022 Age 17) and 425 pound SSB supported split squat (Feb 2022 Age 17) posted on my Twitter.
In order to improve in all skills again in my Junior year, I developed with my coaches a detailed training plan. This training program involves catcher instruction/drills with a former UNC and Oakland Athletics minor league catcher as well as an arm strengthening program, strength training, hitting lessons/practice and nutrition.
I currently hold a 3.6 GPA and have made honors all quarters to date. Due to my academic accomplishments as well as my demonstrated leadership, character, and service, I was selected to the National Honor Society in 2021. An example of my service to others was when I spent many hours over the past two years helping deliver furniture and food to the poor even during the pandemic.
2021-2022 were very successful years on and off the field due to my work ethic, confidence and determination. I am driven to play baseball in college at the very highest level and my passion for the sport and high academic and athletic goals that I have set for myself will ensure that I get there.
As a leader in the classroom and on the baseball field with proven character and academic standards, I am confident that I will be a valuable student athlete to a university and their baseball program.
