Personal Statement

My collegiate goals and aspirations are to study computer engineering and earn a degree, while playing baseball and winning championships with the same school!

My coaches have been some of my greatest mentors.  I am so grateful for them.  Because of their tutelage, I have been trained to play, and have played every position on the field.  It has made me a smarter and more reliable ballplayer.  Give me a job to do...I will get it done, and I will do it well!

Although I am easy going by nature, I take my preparation for baseball very seriously.  Year round I do strength and conditioning training, eat healthy, get plenty of rest, and maintain my arm health and strength.  My work ethic is to show up early, stay late, and put quality work in.  I hustle out onto the field and try to be the first player in position.  When it's time to hit, I try and be the first player back in the dugout.  If something doesn't go my way in a game, I just forget about it and prepare for what is next.  Nothing is more fun to me than playing baseball.

I have five other siblings.  Three of them are younger than me and still live at home.  Two of them have intellectual disabilities.  Helping them each day has matured me, taught me patience and humility, and made me kinder and more considerate to others.  I am employed by New Mexico Workforce Connection helping people find jobs, our unemployment rate in my city is 2.8% the lowest in the state. I volunteer as a unified partner and coach in Special Olympics.  In the summer, I volunteer with Meals On Wheels, delivering meals to shut-ins.  I am the Senior Patrol Leader in my Boy Scout Troop.  Lastly, I hold a youth leadership calling at my church.

I played right field, left field, 1st base, and catcher in 4 other games. Saw a baserunner take a big lead off 2nd base after I received the throw at 1st base on a groundball to the shortstop. I ran at him then threw over to 3rd base to help catch the baserunner in a pickle between 2nd and 3rd for a double play. No pass balls behind the plate. I hit a double, lined out hard to center, lined out hard to 1st base, hit a sacrifice groundball, walked on a 9 pitch at-bat, had 2 RBI, scored once, hit the ball hard all weekend.

I was pulled after walking the lead off hitter in the 2nd, we were down 3-1. Tough loss, but a great year for Artesia Bulldog Baseball. It had been 19 years since we last competed in the state championship game in 2000!
  • Camp/Event
  • District Championship Game - Artesia HS (#3) vs. Goddard HS (#2) ***Game 2***
  • 5/04/19 to 5/04/19
  • I took the hill in the 7th to get the last two outs of the District Championship Game against the #2 ranked Goddard Rockets. I took the ball with 1 out and a runner on second base. I faced two hitters, throwing my best fastball, striking out both of them swinging.
  • Camp/Event
  • District Game - Artesia HS vs. Lovington HS **GAME 3**
  • 4/27/19 to 4/27/19
  • Played right field in the sixth, no action. I lined out to their right-fielder after he laid out near the line, robbing me of a double-GREAT PLAY! I tip my cap to him. I was called on to get the last out of the game with the tying run on second base and the winning run/designated hitter at the plate. I threw two fastballs by him, then spotted a sinker at the knees that froze him. It was called a ball...the crowd and I thought it was strike 3. No matter, I came at him again with my best fastball, he grounded out weakly to short, GAME OVER!
  • Camp/Event

  • Camp/Event
  • Artesia Invitational Tournament - Artesia HS vs. Santa Teresa HS
  • 3/22/19 to 3/22/19
  • I started and pitched 3 complete innings, striking out 2, getting all remaining outs on weak groundballs and pop-ups. My stuff was really on through the first three, especially my change-up, which was pretty much swing and miss! I was pulled in the 4th, after giving up a lead off single, then hanging a change-up that one-hopped the left center-field wall, scoring a run. I ended up taking the loss hard, but was grateful that I was only hit hard that one pitch!

  • Jay Johnson (University of Arizona) MLK Weekend Team Camp
  • 1/13/18 to 1/14/18
  • This camp was a showcase-style tournament. Teams registered and competed against one another in games. There was an option for entire teams to register, or individuals to register and be put together as a team. I registered as an individual and was placed on a team with twelve other individual campers to form the "U of A" team. We played four games. Our opponents were Sahuarita, Nor Cal Valley, Nogales, and Mountain Ridge High Schools. I hit an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap, drew a couple walks, stole third base with a hook-slide, had multiple pitch "quality-at-bats", made some tough plays at shortstop, and pitched one inning in relief- striking out a hitter, and breaking another hitters bat who "popped-out" to the first baseman.
  • Camp/Event
  • University of the Southwest Winter Holiday Camp
  • 12/30/17 to 12/31/17
  • Attended a two day instructional camp on pitching and hitting. At the pitching camp, I learned several throwing drills to add to my warm-up program, and drills that have enhanced my balance and improved my finish. At the hitting camp, I learned some new drills to improve upper and lower body mechanics, and made a modification to my load. Consequently, I am attacking the baseball out-front and driving the ball up the middle consistently, with more power!

With bases loaded and two outs, I hit a line drive up the middle to score two runs. Had quality at-bats, running up high pitch counts. Was a great experience playing against a university team...I know I can and will compete at the next level!
