Personal Statement

My name is Daniel Weber.  This fall I will be a senior at Ardsley High School in Ardsley, a suburb of  New York City.  I have played baseball since I have been 5 years old.  My passion for the game came from my family. We have a strong love of baseball going back to my great grandfather who was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan.  My parents taught me about the game and took me to Yankees’ and Mets’ games often.

Baseball is to me what music might be to a musician or painting might be to an artist.  I have the drive to work hard everyday and improve my skills as well as learn everything I can about the game to become a better player.  The game itself is what drives me to become as good as I can be. I know I can make an impact on any team I play for. My goal is to continue my growth as a player and play at the college level at a school that fits me academically as well as athletically.

I have been a starter on the Ardsley High School Baseball Team since my sophomore year.  My main position is middle infield, but I have also played 3rd base.  This past season our team was league champions and made it to the 3rd round of the regional playoffs.  My statistics this year were  (in 20 games):  .377 batting average, (7 doubles),15 RBI,  .400 on-base-percentage. My 60 yard dash speed is 7 seconds and my throwing speed to 1st base is 79-81 mph. In one of my best games this season, I went 4 for 4 with 5 RBI in a win against one of our rivals. I was also named co-captain and have lettered in baseball all three years I’ve been on the team.  Another highlight this year was that I was named to the starting team for Rivertowns  All-Star Team (lower Westchester County)

This summer I played for the Westchester Stars, tournament team from Westchester County in the AAABC.  We played in tournaments throughout the East Coast, including Virginia and Rhode Island.  This gave me a chance to see different areas of the country.

I am looking to go to school mainly in the east coast. I enjoy warm weather and being near a city. And I would like to find a school where I can play baseball year-round. However, not to limit myself, I am also looking at schools in New England as well.  This summer gave me the opportunity to visit schools in Rhode Island.  I found the New England fills my need for a school near a city. I currently undecided as far as a major is concerned.

The academics at Ardsley High School have been rigorous and challenging for me.  I am discovering myself as a learner. I have found that learning through doing such as projects and participating in activities is the most meaningful way for me to understand and master a subject, new idea or new concept.  For example, in 10th grade I did a research project for Global History that required us to research our topic and build a model. The topic was genocides, and we had to research information of specific incidents of genocide and build a memorial for those who died. I chose to build a fountain because it symbolized renewal and peace. When completed, my project was one of the best in the class.  I have been challenged when subjects are taught mostly through lecture with little interaction and conversation in class. As I have progressed in high school, I have become more diligent and am working harder to accomodate that style of teaching. I have learned to incorporate my strength through active participation by reviewing with classmates and utilizing strategies for note taking. I have found technololgy to be helpful and look forward to honing my skills through the use of this tool.

Again, my goal  is to continue my growth as a player and play at the college level at a school that fits me academically as well as athletically, and find a major that I will be happy with.
