My name is Faith Strabala-Karosich and I am a Senior (Class of 2024), cheering on the Varsity Stunt, Cheer and Pom team at Douglas High School in Minden, Nevada. This upcoming season our team has doubled in size and competition, and will be performing as a Varsity Stunt, Cheer and Pom, similar to what college teams are doing. I feel humbled to have been chosen (only 3 of us) who will be utilized in all three sections of our big team, earning me a "double varsity" letter. I started cheering with our Varsity team my sophomore year (thanks COVID), however, I have danced for over 9 years and competed with an elite dance team in recent years. I am highly proficient in all genres of dance, including jazz, Hip Hop, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, and musical theater. I have very elegant dance, turns, jumps and leaps and can easily go from "sheer elegance" in a leotard and pointe shoes, to "thug" in Adidas and sweats for Hip Hop. I am extremely flexible in all areas and am able to do the following: scorpion, heel grab, bow & arrow, toe touch and herkie, etc. While being a flyer is my chosen position, I am very versatile; I can back-spot, front-spot, base and am my coaches' "go-to girl" when last minute trick changes need to be made!
Also this year, I have been working with my stunt pod on new, more difficult stunts, namely inversions, switch-ups, twist-ups, full downs, braced front tuck, chair sits, walk-ups, and toss to hands This is in addition to the other tricks I’ve had for the past two+ years, namely lib, extension, baskets, kick-full basket, aerobeque, heel grab, baja, and various one-man stunts. I still take dance classes to grow my dance, timing, performance, "sass", flexibility skills to an even greater level; I will also be spending more time in the weight room to strengthen my body overall. I am also very honored to have been picked to be one of the Team Captain's this year (as well as last year).
In addition to cheering, I’m involved throughout my school. I have participated in school leadership since 7th grade, which includes being elected as Jr. Class President last year and served as an officer in Block D. I will continue to serve DHS through the Letterman’s Club-Community Outreach “Block D” which is a program requiring varsity athletes to serve 10 hours of community service hours per semester. I am a continuing member of the National Honors Society. This past year I was the President and Founder of "Women in STEM", which is a new club at DHS that serves to honor and recognize the 3% of female students in the AP STEM classes at our school. I am also a member of Psi Mu Sigma where we do “Suicide Prevention” outreach in our school and community. Recently I was recognized by the NIAA for the 22-23 Nevada All-State Academic Team (Fall Spirit) Nevada Academic Excellence Award, of which I am very honored.
During my previous years at Douglas High, I have attended a Suicide Prevention Camp at UNLV, which is a great honor for me, as there were only 40 students selected throughout the state of Nevada. During 21-22 school year, I was a student contributor to the "Living Out Loud" weekly podcast in partnership with our local Suicide Prevention organization. I also attended the Leadership Camp (CADA) hosted by UC Santa Barbara last summer where I learned and obtained more tools to grow my leadership and partnering skills. (Just a side note, I crushed and won the Tik Tok Dance challenge, as well as the "Wadaliacha" challenge for my school during camp - it was a great week!) Additionally, this past spring, I had the honor of being a Molly Award Recipient (MeFiYi) for the 6th year; this award requires all nominees to have 3.0+ g.p.a., sports involvement and active community service to be considered for awards.
In my free time, I am very active in my church and its youth group. I work part-time as a hostess at a local restaurant, love to play my bass guitar and ukulele, draw, paint, take pictures of everything (a few of my photos were entered and won "Honorable Mention" in the Scholastic Art Contest). I hike, camp, read, play tennis and golf, sing at the top of my lungs and eat ice cream! I work hard and give 110% in everything I do, love corrections/input from coaches and feel I am very coachable, am hungry to learn and grow in everything I do. I not only love to celebrate when I accomplish new things, but always encourage and celebrate accomplishments, big and small, with my teammates!
I have been working with private tumbling & stunting coaches and am taking tumbling classes at 5-Star Athletics gym to grow my stunting and tumbling skills. I have been making huge strides in this area at putting my new skills together and currently have a round-off back handspring, standing back handspring (multiple in a row), front handspring, front tuck, front/back walk overs and side & front Ariel and can connect various tricks together i.e., toe touch - back handspring - toe touch, etc. I am so excited with the progress I have made this past year and look forward to adding even more tumbling skills; I recently got my round-off, back tuck.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a little bit and look at what I have to offer!
Blessings, Faith
