Hi coaches!
My name is Kelsey Blais and I am currently a sophomore at Westfield High School. I have been playing field hockey for 8 years now, since 3rd grade, when I fell in love with the sport.
I am currently playing club for U19 Cape Ann White and I have played with the WestWickTown Club.
I always try to have a positive attitude at practice and games, cheering on my teammates to do better whether we are winning or not. I value communication on the field and you can hear me talking to my teammates, letting them know what they should be doing, with and without the ball. I have also been told by coaches and teammates that I am the loudest on the field, even with a mouthguard in, whether I am playing or from the bench.
I believe it is necessary for goalies to be athletic and fit, and to have a strong core, so I try to work out three to four days a week. I am open to learning new skills and new styles of goalkeeping and am willing to try my coaches suggestions and discuss with them how other ways that I can improve in net.
In the 24-25 season, my high school field hockey team won the MIAA team sportsmanship award, which shows the team’s and my values, when it comes to playing in games. I believe in good sportsmanship no matter if we win or lose, an example of this that I love to do, after games, is show the other team’s goalie some kindness, by letting them know if they make a good save. I have always felt a special bond with other goalies since we are usually isolated on the field and it can get kind of lonely, so I love to support all goalies.
My favorite goalie duo, although they aren’t on the same team anymore, was Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman from the Boston Bruins. They represented what a true goalie bond was by celebrating each other’s wins in a dramatic fashion and they were never jealous of each other. I hope to be in a goalie duo like that one day.
I have been trying to improve myself in all things field hockey like doing things such as going to goalie skills clinics, watching other teams play, and trying out and being selected for the Western team at the Baystate Games 2024 (A summer Olympic style games for the regions of MA to play against each other.)
I have also started my journey on becoming a referee for field hockey, which is helping me to have a better understanding of the rules and what I can and cannot do on the field, I also enjoy helping out with the kids that are just starting their journeys, teaching and encouraging them.
I am a Morgan’s Message Ambassador for my high school and I am a part of many other clubs at school.
I value my education and I take my grades seriously. If I believe that I didn’t get the grade I deserved, I will talk with the teacher about it and we usually work something out. I love to participate in all of my classes and I like to learn. In addition, if somebody is struggling on my team or in my class, then I will try to help them so that they will understand what is being taught.
