“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming” ~ John Wooden. I am Alex Garren, a 5’10”, 160lb freshman at Castle High School in Newburgh, IN and will graduate in 2016. Castle is a 5A school with approximately 2000 students competing in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference (SIAC). I have played full contact football since I was five years old in Tennessee. Until middle school, I played both sides of the ball as middle line backer and receiver/running back. At seventh grade, I committed to focus on the receiver position. I have played that position exclusively since.
As a starter wearing #88 on my freshman team in the H-Slot receiving position, our team finished 7-1. We were the SIAC champions. I had 22 pass receptions for a total of 510 yards averaging 23 yards per catch, 5 touchdowns, and the longest reception of 85 yards. Additionally, out of the 8 punt returns for a total of 146 yards, one was a 66-yard return for a touchdown. I also participated in kick return with the longest of the three being 26 yards. Collectively, I had 33 touches for 6 touchdowns and 702 yards. Additionally, I was voted Offensive MVP by my teammates which was the greatest honor and recognition.
I also played basketball and was slotted as six-man. Our team went undefeated and also won the SIAC championship. We finished with a record of 18-0. I believe my competitive spirit and desire to not only win but more importantly encourage my teammates to find their fullest potential was part of our team success.
My goal as a sophomore was to letter and become a starter on the Varsity football team. Through my tenacious work ethic, aggressive spirit, being a leader amongst my teammates on and off the field, continued nurturing of my confidence and self-control while staying open-minded, being eager to learn and improve, I achieved that goal. That spirit brought me into my Junior year where I saw continued success in singular improvement as well as, and most importantly, team improvement. As I move into my Senior year, I am focused in helping my team become state champions. My off season work with my teammates will help us collectively reach that goal as one unit.
I am 100% committed to playing college football. I am also 100% committed to doing the best that I can with my academics so that when I graduate from high school, I will not only positively represent my school on the field, but also in the classroom. I strive to live my life with integrity, honesty, enthusiasm and loyalty while being intent, driven, sincere and humble. I look forward with a clear vision to become the best student-athlete and man that I can be while honoring those that have supported me along the way.
