My name is Barry Greene and I've lived in Brockton, Massachusetts my entire life. I come from a family of seven. My family consists of my parents, three siblings, my grandmother, and myself. The schools that I've gone to are George Jr. Elementary, Joseph Plouffe Academy, and Southeastern Technical Institute.
From kindergarten to eighth grade I've taken spanish classes. Although I'm not fluent, being involved in these classes has impacted my academic career immensely. Becoming more culturally aware is one of the effects of taking these classes. I've gained more cultural understanding and because of this I am able to understand others easier. I'm also more open to learn about other cultures. The two-way program was responsible for me learning spanish. I would alternate from english to spanish week after week. My classmates mostly consisted of people that came from a hispanic background. If a person wasn’t in the two-way program they would take regular classes in english.
I attend Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School (SERSD). After half a year of being exposed to all of the shops offered, I selected Automotive Technology as my shop for the next three and a half years. Taking this shop has helped me gain more confidence. Being a part of Automotive Technology has taught me to understand and problem-solve when there are car-related issues on my car or cars that belong to other people who might ask me to look at theirs. In the future, I can be able to save money on automotive repair services and can easily find ways to fix what I can myself. Helping others is something that I’ve grown to love doing the more I gained experience in my skills and the more I’ve been able to interact with other people. Going to SERSD has opened many doors for my future. I’ve made long lasting connections and have a positive experience in learning about myself and the things I am passionate about throughout my academic career. It has given me many choices of how I want to proceed future-wise although I’m not sure exactly where I want to go, I want to be productive and successful. I want to make a difference. School is my first priority when it comes to my future. I always try to learn from my mistakes. Sometimes I get worried that I won’t find a way but I always try to look on the bright side. The subjects I do the best in are history and english. Even if I have problems with certain subjects I always work to get my grades up to where I want them to be.
In this experience, sports have always been a part of my growth as an individual. Ever since elementary school, I've been playing sports. My two favorite sports are football and track and field. I've been playing football since the fourth grade. My father was the person who first got me into football. He played the game himself when he was younger so he signed me up to a team and I haven’t looked back since. My positions are mainly a left guard or right tackle on offense, althoughI have played others . Playing football has taught me that working together as a team is important. My coaches and teammates showed me that one person can't drive a team to victory. In eighth grade, I played with the Brockton Jr Boxers unlimited pop warner league. We won the State Championship, in Massachusetts. our record was 13 -1. Iv’e also gone to two football university (FBU) camps. I learned alot of from the coaches there because theyv’e benn in my position before.
In highschool, during my freshman year, we went undefeated. It was the first time that a southeastern freshman team never lost a game during their season. We worked together and practiced often. In doing this, it showed us what we can achieve when we work together. It even showed me that sometimes relying on others is good and that you can't do everything yourself. Playing football has also taught me discipline. It showed me that not having patience and rushing into things can be costly and affect you in the long run. I try to find out my opponents tendencies and reflexes in order to help our team in any way I can. I started track and field in the sophomore year of high school. My events are men's shot put and fifty meter dash. Doing track and field has taught me that it's not always about being first, it's about doing better than last time. Doing better itself is an achievement. I always strive to do better to prove to myself that, that isn't the end and I can always do better. Doing track and field has also shown me that trusting in my teammates is the only way to win. When we work together and trust each other's abilities no one can beat us.
If I get the chance to go to your school you're looking at a person who will never give up and press on until the very end.
