Dear Prospective Coach,
My name is James Maxwell. I am currently a rising senior at Westlake High School (Thornwood NY), and I am on course to graduate in June of 2024. This past season was my fourth varsity season playing OL/DL/ linebacker as well as my team's long snapper.
My goal is to find a college at which I can complete a bachelor’s degree while contributing to the football program. Football has long been a critically important part of my life and I cannot imagine my college career without it.
I started playing flag football in first grade and moved onto tackle football in third grade. I was honored with my team’s “Wildcat Award” in 4th grade. I have learned a lot about myself through playing football. When I started playing, I was very shy and did not have lot of confidence. Football has taught me how strong I really am. It has shown me that if I am dedicated and if I work hard that the possibilities are endless.
Not only has football opened my eyes to my own strengths, but it has also provided me with an amazing support system. I still remember my first day of practice in third grade. My coach invited the high school players to join our practice and I felt so overwhelmed that I went to sit out. My coach, who I just met, sat with me, chatted with me, and supported me until I was comfortable and ready to participate. When I returned to the field my teammates all cheered me on and made sure I didn’t quit. Our friendships grew and my teammates became my brothers over the years. It was in that third-grade moment, that I knew I could trust my coach and my team. I fell in love with the game and the family-like atmosphere, and I became determined to work hard and to do anything I could to support my team in achieving success.
I have several qualities that allow me to contribute to my team’s efforts. Not only do I possess the physical stature to excel on the field as I am currently 6'2" and 245lb, but I also possess the skill set. I have always played on both the offensive and defensive lines and currently play center and linebacker. I played for Westlake Middle School’s modified team in 7th and 8th grade, as well as for The Downtown Giants during my 8th grade year. My team on Downtown Giants finished the season undefeated, and as Champions of the Westchester United 7th/8th grade division and I was selected to play in the division’s All-Star game.
Please know that I am as dedicated to the other areas in my life as I am to football. My current GPA is a 86%. I have a strong work ethic, grit, heart, and the desire to win. I am a team player and I appreciate the value of my relationships with my teammates on and off the field. I have always felt that my team is part of my family, and I am truly willing to put in the work to help us be successful. I am strong in my faith, and I believe that it’s important to have a good moral character. I know that I will make a good addition to the right school's football team and overall community.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
James Maxwell
