Being diagnosed with a hearing disability in my childhood, I learned early about rising above adversity. Although I was able to overcome my hearing loss, it was only after it had significantly affected my speech. This caused me to have social anxiety for many years. The ability to lead is not rooted in the desire to be up front but nurtured in one's ability to grow and offer their own growth as an extension to others. What I lack in social fortitude, I make up in athletic acuity and knowledge. These traits not only make me successful on the field but in education and life.
Having to overcome dwindling grades as a result of my hearing disability, I learned that I was actually capable of meeting and even exceeding academic standars. Thererfore, I challenged myself more each year to improve my grades in an effort to potential attend college and get a degree. Something that would not have been possible had I simply let my degree define me.
Football for many years has been my safe place where I can just shine without any reservations. Although playing football at the next level was never my goal, I believe doing so would offer me the mental release I would need to remain successful in college academics.
