My name is Garrett Newman. I play football at Grace Community School in Tyler, Texas. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to play for some of the best coaches in Texas. I have grown up on a 60 acre farm east of Tyler, Texas. We have cattle and I know the importance of hard work. I have helped my parents in the feeding and care of livestock since I started elementary school. I have also enjoyed growing up of the farm, providing a place for my friends and me to ride dirt bikes and four-wheelers. We also like to hunt and fish on our place.
My parents are both civil engineers. My dad was a two year starter at defensive back at Robert E. Lee High School (5A) here in Tyler. My mom ran track in high school and college.
Football is big in Texas; especially here in East Texas. My hometown of Tyler, Texas is the home of “The Tyler Rose,” Earl Campbell. I have grown up wanting to play football. I have played since 5th grade where I played Pop Warner Football. I played in Junior High and Junior Varsity as a freshman. I earned a starting position as a sophomore in the defensive backfield and saw action on offense as well at both quarterback and inside receiver in the spread offense we run at Grace Community School here in Tyler.
I have learned a lot from participating in varsity football. It has changed my outlook and attitude toward life. It has taught me to be dedicated, loyal, hardworking, and diligent.
It is my dream to play college football. I am looking for a college where I can contribute on the field. I also want to go to a good college where academics are a priority. At this time I am leaning toward studying engineering or the sciences, but I am open to other majors.
I am 6’0” tall and 165 pounds and growing. I run a 4.42 forty yard dash. I was a state qualifier in the 100m dash and 200m dash last year as a sophomore. I placed third in the 200m dash at State.
