Ever since I was very young I've been extremely competitive. Although I tried, I could not win at everything. However, I was persistent, trying my hardest to improve my skills in whatever I was doing. This trait of perseverance has helped me succeed in the classroom and on the field.
I have been blessed to have two sets of parents who have instilled great values in me. One of the values they taught me was commitment. This trait helped me earn my black belt in taekwondo, which took 6 years achieve. Because my parents believed in me and wanted to support my goals, they helped me by allowing me to go to private training facilities and football camps, which made me appreciate how good I have it.
One of the most important things my mother taught me was to always make good relationships with people, especially those who could help me. The ability to build rapport has helped me in the classroom by getting to know my teachers, and on the field by building strong bonds with my coaches and teammates. When the strong bonds are established, I try my hardest to keep these bonds and show that I can do my best. While I might not be able to return the favor to all those who helped me, I can pay it forward and help others using the lessons that I was taught.
To me, the quote “to whom much is given, much is expected,” means that I have a responsibility to use my strengths in leadership, and to be an example for my peers to do what is right. As an older student in taekwondo, I’m now able to help instruct the younger ones. Being selected as MVP of my varsity football team my junior year shows athletic ability combined with leadership.
As a student athlete, I plan to apply my traits of perseverance, commitment and leadership to excel on and off the field.
