As a freshman, it was a new start for me. Not making the high school basketball team helped me grow rather than just let me down, showing me how good I really am. It motivated me to start playing more rather than quit and stop. I've had plenty of individual athletic competition with track and swimming and when I was younger playing 8 years of soccer however I want to transition now to basketball. I've played more in the past few months since tryouts than I have in the past few years, spending around 3 hours a day on the driveway or court. Now my aim is to be a better ball handler and attack more when I have the ball, and academically, I am striving for that high honors going into sophomore year.
I attended a basketball camp at Sacred Heart University and have learned a lot more moves and skills, but the most important quality I took from the camp was the experience. I have never played competitive basketball and this is the first time I have actually played where its a 5v5, not recess or playing with my brothers. Going into something with no experience is like riding a bike with no handles. It still moves but you can't steer. Before I just dribbled with the ball and drove when there's space, but that's it. I didn't have moves to create space and beat the defender, I passed it out to a teammate. But with this camp, I'm improving and being more confident with the ball. Taking this experience with me, I am more ready than ever for tryouts next year and I'm looking to be a starter.
