When I was 6 years old growing up in the inner city of Chicago, my grandmother would encourage my cousins and I to go outside and do something with our time. We decided to create a basketball rim out of a light pole and a crate in the alley behind her house. We would stay in the alley for hours playing basketball. Ever since that time I knew loved the game of basketball.
Basketball has helped me to identify many character traits and expand them. For example, my competitive nature, my love of winning, and being the best. My work ethic and relentless pursuit to get better is evidence of this. Basketball has made me be a more selfless person. I love to involve my teammates and often encourage them off the court as well. Basketball has also given me the opportunity to enhance my leadership skills. I am the captain of my AAU team and I love to help my teammates grow physically and our team improve overall. I know my teammates depend on me, so I always try my hardest to be the best version of myself. One obstacle I had to overcome as a basketball player is broadening my horizons and stepping out of my comfort zone. I was accustomed to playing basketball one way. Playing for different teams, coaches and in different arenas has helped me become a more well-rounded basketball player. I have had to evolve and constantly push myself to enrich my game.
A goal of mine is to attend a 4-year university and be able to play basketball on the college level. I have a passion for business and plan to study finance or marketing. I know the importance of being a student athlete. I know to achieve this goal I have to continue to study hard and perfect my game. I know I would succeed at the college level because I am competitive, relentless, and determined.
