At the age of 10, I developed Alopecia, an autoimmune disease that caused all of my hair to fall out. Alopecia was devastating for me as a developing athlete, but became my drive to excel at many of the skills and hobbies I have since pursued. Above all, it has driven me personally to embrace, empathize and include others who share simple imperfections. It has taught me to be kind and understanding.
I have learned to embrace opportunities and take chances. I was blessed to be able to meet and talk with Charlie Villanueva, an ex NBA player who also had alopecia. I have also been fortunate to meet and train with Larry Hughes; an ex NBA player, who also encourages and assists young athletes through his academy. I’ve been trained by various coaches and developers. I’ve learned to take the best of their wisdom, techniques and advise to develop basketball IQ and apply it to my game. Each one had something relevant to share that changed me into a better player. Whether it was to “get tougher” or “pass and cut”, I’m able to draw continually from their voices in my head.
I’m determined to play basketball at a D3 or D2 level because I’ve taken chances and been given the opportunities that compel me in that direction. I hope to above all else, continue the legacy of service and mentorship that I have enjoyed while pursuing the sport I love. I have taken an interest in Psychology for my undergraduate degree. I will possibly pursue law at the post graduate.
