I was introduced to basketball at the age of 6. I enrolled in basketball training sessions, camps, and local recreational basketball leagues. Around middle school, I knew I wanted to take basketball seriously. I started participating in more training, going to camps, and joining AAU teams. I even started watching the games more, from the NBA, NCAA and even high schools. I spent time learning about the teams, the players while studying the games. Playing at a collegiate level was and is my dream goal.
I have a high basketball IQ and strong ball handling skills. I am known for my work ethic, hustle, dedication, and mental toughness. I am coachable and a team player. Encouraging teammates, leading the team in stretches, asking my coach guiding questions on what I could do better and clarifying questions making sure I know all the plays. I always give my best effort and energy to practices, games, and training no matter what.
Basketball brings out another side of me. I am very chill and quiet off the court. My coach said “you can’t be quiet and be a PG.” Playing as a PG, I have learned that I need to be more dominant on the court. Besides the physical part of playing basketball I love how it creates and connects great friendships that last a lifetime. I overcame a lot from a young man who wasn’t the best at basketball, being laughed at and no one wanting me on their team. This experience lit a fire in me and has built my character striving to work harder.
In school, I take education seriously, trying my best to maintain a good GPA. I know that without good grades there is no basketball. I was awarded the Moriuchi Scholarship my freshman year renewable every year for my academic performance and character. I am involved with many school clubs and activities including MLK Club and the Black Student Union. Most recently I participated in my school’s Intensive Learning program in Peru, where we did community service. Outside of school I am also active as a member of the NAACP Camden County East Youth Council and the Burlington County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Both organizations provide leadership development and community service.
I want to attend a college that is the best fit for me. I am open to many options but I would like to be a part of a school that is community oriented where I can achieve academically and play the sport that I love competitively. The school should bring out the best version of myself and develop me into one of the greatest basketball players ever. I would like to be an inspiration to others, my community and ultimately make my parents proud.
