My name is Ari Phillips and I am a senior at Uncommon Preparatory Charter High School. The name, Ari means Lion in Hebrew, which connects heavily to my character as a student athlete and as an individual. In the wild the lion is always seen as the king of the jungle. The lion‘s respect comes with its stature. The lion isn’t the biggest animal in its environment, because the elephant is. It isn’t the fastest, because the cheetah is. It isn’t the tallest, because the giraffe is. But the Lion uses it‘s ability to be dominant in its environment. Its mentality as an animal allows it to be on top. I like to equate myself with the power that Lions have, not only because it’s a part of my name, but because I aspire to be the best that I can be in what I do. Whether it’s making consistent shots when I’m needed to, making each dribble impactful, reassuring teammates when confidence is low, or knowing my teammates best opportunities I want to be the best I can as a player. As a big Kobe fan, I strive to have the mentality that brings out the best version of myself. I know I have the potential become the best version of myself as I bring out my inner Lion.
