I don't want to know what I can get, I want to know what I can give. - Emerson
About Emerson :
My name is Ralph Turner and I currently serve as the Boys’ basketball coach at Obion Central High School. Before taking the job at Obion Central, I had served the previous 26 years as a Head College basketball coach at Union University and Colorado State University-Pueblo. I have won close to 500 games as a college coach, served as the NAIA representative on the USA basketball selection committee, and won a NAIA National Championship on staff at Lipscomb University. I have recruited and coached numerous All Americans and One National Player of the Year. I say all this to say, I am not your normal high school coach or evaluator of players, and I will tell you the truth about my players.
I have coached Emerson Fussell for the past two years at Obion Central. He has started every game for me at point guard.
Here is my honest opinion of “E” as we call him.
Emerson Fussell’s Strengths
He is an electric passer. He is as good of passer in the open court, as I have ever seen play.
He has great handles and is quick with the ball.
He is a lefty and is quite shifty with the ball.
He is definitely a scorer who can score points in bunches.
He is a threat from all over the court.
He is a fantastic driver and can score in traffic.
He can take over a game with his offense and his defense.
He dominated games even when he did not score. In a big win on the road vs good competition he had 14 assists, 7 points and 2 turnovers. In another road win he only took 5 shots and had 13 assists.
He is an amazing free throw shooter and broke the state record for most free throws made in one game and one quarter. Emerson made 25 in a game where we ran four corners a lot.
Emerson was Unanimous Player of the Year in our District this year. He faced defenses set to stop him every night. Yet he still led our district in scoring.
Emerson has things to work on. He must be better from three point. He is a great shooter, and I believe he will be a 38-42 % shooter from three for us next year. He also needs to work harder at being defensively sound. He has great hands and gets lots of touches and steals, but he needs to not gamble as much.
If I was a college coach, I would not hesitate to recruit Emerson, he has a will to win that is a life force of its own. He hates losing and loves to be in the gym. I expect him to be recruited by many schools next year.
