I have always dreamed to go as far as possible with basketball, but like most kids I just dreamed I really didn't realize what it took to get there. I've always had naturally talent but I doubted myself a lot because I wanted to please everyone else. It took me awhile to understand that it doesn't matter how talented you are, what matters is that you prove to yourself how much you want it every time you step on the court. With hard work, support, and self-confidence I'm determined to play at the college level. Last year, as a sophmore, I was really coming into my game having a real breakout season leading to me being moved up to varsity. I had to elevate my game to play with the bigger guys, and I did just that. I listened, watched, adapted and I knew during this I was ready. I played well and was starting to stand out as a star player. Unfortunately, at the end of the season my appendix ruptured. While in surgery, a freak accident happened and my colon was cut by mistake. I ended up nearly losing my life. After a second surgery, spending a few days in the ICU and on the medical floor, a few blood transfusions, and a lot of medication I was released. I was left with a scar from the top of my stomach to the bottom. A reminder everyday of how I was given another chance.
Sitting out for six weeks was rough, I had just started to dominate. I couldn't do anything but dribble a ball and sit and watch everyone else play. I lost a lot of weight and strength and started to feel down. Also during this time my parents were separating. It was a lot for me to take in. I started to believe there would be no more basketball for me. When my recovery time was up and I began to play again I knew I wasn't the same. I begin to doubt again. Having a supportive mom, she got me a trainer who pushed me to get back in shape. It sucked. It was the hardest thing to do to push through sometimes but I did it. Now playing my junior year I see the elevation in my game and where it can take me. I've never believe in myself the way I do now. I get distracted with being a teenager at times but I stick to my commitment to myself. I plan to continue to train with my trainer, as well as, the experience I get with my team. I believe given the opportunity I will prove myself to be a dominate player. I know that I still have much work to do but I have the growth within myself and a supportive team around me to get where I want to be. Basketball is like life to me, every game I can apply to a situation I have or will experience. I'm ready for the challenge.
