My name is Will Slyker, and I have had a basketball in my hand as far back as I can remember. Having a brother 6 years older than me meant always playing with bigger, stronger players and having the benefit of a personal coach and mentor as a big brother. Faith and family are my foundations. When I moved to Honduras for mission work with my family, it seemed impossible to pursue my passion for basketball. Instead of giving up, I formed a basketball team at my bilingual school, and we competed in a National Tournament, placing 2nd in the country.
Upon moving back to Texas, living in a small town and attending a 3A TAPPS ( Texas Association of Parochial and Private Schools) private school, I have defied the odds again and overcome obstacles of limited basketball opportunity and exposure. I have played on competitive National AAU teams since 7th grade and doors were opened to be mentored and trained by incredible, elite coaches with professional experience.
I reached 1000 career points my sophomore year in HS on the Varsity team and was the leading scorer in the state of Texas in all of TAPPS. I am a 3 level scorer who plays at a high IQ level. I can create for others as well as my own shot. My strengths are shooting, court vision, and I am calm under pressure with a high competitive drive. To further develop my skills, I train every day. I work hard and know my best basketball is ahead of me.
My unique cross cultural experiences have cultivated perseverance, adaptability, and faith that anything is possible with hard work and determination. I am a “team first” player, always looking to make the right basketball play. A coach can expect that persistence and discipline is a part of who I am on and off the court as reflected in my 4.0 GPA and leadership roles like Student Ambassador, National Honor Society, and mission work around the world.
As I pursue my love of basketball, I want to attend a college where I can maximize my skill set as far as it will take me, and play at the highest level of competition possible.
I think my intensity, competitive will to win and creativity on offense sets me apart as a player. I hope you will consider me as a prospect for your program and come see me in person.
