My name is Tommy Borta. I attend Wausau West High School and I am in the class of 2017. Although I have aspirations to play basketball at the collegiate level, I am a student-athlete and I take great pride in my academic achievements. I value my education, as I am aware of the lifetime benefits that are received from obtaining a college degree. In order to receive the best education possible, I challenge myself in the classroom by taking AP courses and actively participating in the classroom. In addition, even with these challenging courses, I have maintained a high GPA through my first two years of high school and plan on finishing even stronger than I started.
Outside of the classroom, I am very involved in my school. I am a member of Safe School Ambassadors, Link Crew (mentorship program for incoming freshmen), DECA (Business Club and Marketing Competitions), and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Through these activities, I have accepted leadership roles, embraced them, and thrived. Beyond school clubs and activities, I am an active volunteer in my community. I assist with the youth basketball camps conducted through my high school. I also helped coach my younger brother's traveling basketball team, his youth football team and the West High School Junior Varsity Summer League Basketball Team. In addition, I have been a referee for traveling team basketball scrimmages in the Wausau area. I have also volunteered to assist the Wausau Whitewater Rafting Competition as well as several activities in my Church.
From a basketball stand point, I am an extremely hard worker. I am always working on different aspects of my game in order to become a more complete player. I am also very coachable. I accept both advice and criticism and apply it immediately. I embrace coaching because I know it will make me a better player. Additionally, I strive to be a great teammate. I do my best to do all the little things that help our team. Whether it’s diving on the floor for a loose ball or getting excited on the bench when another teammate scores, I try to be the best teammate I can be. Lastly, I am a leader both on and off the court. The Wausau West basketball program just graduated 10 seniors and we are only returning four varsity players. As one of the returning players, I have welcomed the leadership role on our team and organized basketball workouts and team bonding activities over the summer.
During the 2014-2015 basketball season (my sophomore year), I began the season on Junior Varsity, but was quickly moved up to Varsity as I was averaging double figures in points and rebounds. However, with 10 seniors on the team, I had to accept my role as the first player off the bench to provide inside and out scoring from the forward position, stretch the floor because our starting forwards were primarily post players, play tough post defense and grab rebounds. In my 16 Varsity games, I was a key contributor to our program's first winning record in five seasons. I averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds a game coming off the bench and assisted on many key baskets including a game winner that was featured on the local news as a Play of the Week.
Moreover, I know I have a very high ceiling and I have the passion and determination to achieve my potential. I am aware that I need to add weight and muscle and I have obtained a nutrition and workout plan to achieve my objectives. I am not content with the basketball player I am right now and I will put in the hard work that is necessary to play college basketball. I am mindful of the workload required to achieve success in the classroom and on the court at the collegiate level, but I will work harder than any other player to accomplish my goals. In the event that you are searching for a player with my commitment and skill set, I would appreciate the opportunity to personally discuss my potential to be a strong positive contributor to your program.
