My name is Jackson Masiel and I am in the class of 2018 at Davis Senior High School in Davis, CA. Ever since my dad introduced me to golf when I was four years old, I have set aside a large portion of my life at Wildhorse Golf Course in Davis to hone my skills.
I am very academically driven as well-- I have a 4.6 weighted GPA for my current school year, and 4.31 cumulative for all of high school (see Transcript). I scored 33 on the ACT and 1470 on the SAT.
I have never been the most physically imposing athlete, but that has been a good thing for me. I have been forced to score via precision and short-game, without the luxury of length. I currently hit my driver about 240 on the fly, but as I grow in the next few years, I expect to gain 10-20% distance.
My tournament highlights include a one-under 71 at El Macero Country Club for the 2016 Delta League 1 high school tournament, and an even-par 71 at Deer Ridge Golf Course for the 2016 JTNC tournament @ Shadow Lakes/Deer Ridge. When I was a freshman, weighing 95 pounds, I shot 73 at Peach Tree Country Club in Yuba City to claim my first individual high school tournament victory.
My scoring average has been steadily improving over the past few years. As a freshman, my scoring average was just under 80. As a sophomore, it fell to around 75. I have worked hard both around the greens and on refining my swing with swing coach Phil Dawson.
The strength of my game is staying mentally consistent and business-like throughout the entire round.
My post-secondary goal is to attend a highly selective academic institution with a competitive golf team--likely either Division I or III. Even if the team is not elite, I would love the idea of contributing to its improvement. I can guarantee that I will stay focused on what matters most in college-- both competing on behalf of the school and gaining valuable knowledge in the classroom. My sister currently attends Georgetown University, so I know what it takes to achieve highly academically.
When I am not working for myself at the golf course, I am often working in the community-- for example, during the winter, I volunteer at the IRWS homeless shelter here in Davis.
Although I am a late bloomer, I am very dedicated to golf and will focus hard in college. I am confident that this work-ethic is a recipe for huge improvement in the next few years.
