Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Jonathan Rimington. I started playing golf from a very young age, and while I played many sports such as Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer, golf always stood out to me. As I got more and more serious about the game in middle school, I began to set goals to play in college. Going into my freshman year of high school, I ended up breaking my wrist one week before tryouts. During that period of time where I was unable to play, I realized my love for game, and how much I wanted to reach my goals of playing in college. Returning for the remainder of my freshman season, I worked hard to get my game back to where it was and ended up finishing second at our JV Conference Tournament. Working hard over the offseason, I made the varsity team my sophomore year, and helped my team win another Conference Championship with a T-5th 78. A week later at regionals, I shot 79 to tie for 8th place and advance to sectionals. Going into my junior year, I shot a 77 or below in 3 of our 5 18 hole tournaments. The best of these was a 74 at Morris Country Club and was good for a tie for 4th place among state championship winning teams and at least 2 division I golfers. Unfortunately, my Junior season came to a rough ending when I missed advancing to sectionals by one shot. This adversity has pushed me to work even harder at my game, both physically and mentally, so my team and I can reach our goals in this next season! My senior season came to an end recently. A 79.58 tournament scoring average in summer tournaments (IJGA, MAJGT, and Prep Tour) prepared me for an improvement to a 79, 18 Hole scoring average for the IHSA season. Through this season, I earned 1st Team SPC All-Conference honors and finished in the top-10 at regionals. Additionally, I shot 76 or below in 4 out of the 8 tournaments.

Some of the things that set me apart form others is my work ethic, academics, attitude, and recognition of where I need to grow. Whether it be in sports, school, my job, or any other challenge I face, I never stop working hard to continually improve and do the job the right way. In golf, my average score has continually improved, and my best score from each year has been at least 4 strokes lower than the previous year. I look to continue that in my senior year as well! Second of all, just like in golf, I work hard to excel in school. Throughout my high school years I have taken many honors and AP classes and have achieved an unweighted GPA of 4.0. I look forward to my academic experience in college, and the new challenge it will bring! I also strive to have a great attitude on and off the course. While I don't always hit a good shot, I always aim to keep a positive, respectful, and courteous attitude. That applies off the course as well. I bring a competitive and determined, but also cheerful and fun personality to a team environment. I love the team aspect of the game and appreciate how golf is a sport that brings people closer together. Finally, I am the type of person who recognizes where I need to grow. One major example of this was brought about in the fall of 2020. Through my high school, I participated in a nationwide leadership program called Desire to Lead. Going through this program, I found areas I need to grow in surrounding leadership. By completing this program, reading books, and talking with mentors, I am discovering ways to build connections with teammates, set goals, and lead in ways I hadn't before! This is just one of the many aspects of my life I am constantly working hard to improve. I feel now that I am better equipped to lead on my team, in my community, at school, and many other places in my life! Lastly, I always seek to keep my relationship with God at the forefront of my life. One of my favorite bible verses Philipians 4:13 says "I can do all this through Him who gives me strength". I try to remember this verse in all that I do, and do all things for my Savior. All this being said, I aspire to play at the highest level possible, and am looking forward to any opportunity that comes my way!

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Players Challenge #7
  • 7/28/21 to 7/29/21
  • Shot 85-75 to finish at 160 and 29th out of 54 players. Struggled the first day with both my putter and controlling my tee shots. The second day, I managed to overcome a rough first hole and play the remaining 17 holes +1. I did a much better job managing the course in this round and was especially proud of the way I visualized my shots on and around the greens.
  • Camp/Event
  • Players Challenge #6
  • 7/26/21 to 7/27/21
  • Shot 84-82 to shoot 166 and finish T22 out of 56 players. Overall, I struggled with my putter and wedges and never had a great feel for the speed of the greens. However, I'm happy with how I stayed positive mentally and physically throughout both rounds despite not having my best either day.
  • Camp/Event
  • PM Stroke Play #6
  • 6/03/21 to 6/03/21
  • Shot 76 to tie for 5th out of 30 players in the 16-18 division. Although I hit a lot of great putts from 10-20 feet that didn't fall, my distance control and lag putting were much better today. Due to many tight tee shots, I did not hit driver all day. However, hitting 3 Wood and long irons off the tee allowed me to hit fairways and manage the course well.
  • Camp/Event
  • Prep Tour Kellogg Jr. Open Event
  • 5/22/21 to 5/23/21
  • Shot 76-77 to finish with a score of 153 for the two day event. That was good enough for 4th out of 26 competitors in the high school age group. Overall, I felt like my course management was the best it has been all year. Having never played either course before, I executed my plan of playing conservative off the tee and putting myself in position to attack greens. Unfortunately there were some missed opportunities due to my struggles with the putter, but overall my ball striking is headed in the right direction.
  • Camp/Event
  • MAJGT at Orchard Valley
  • 4/17/21 to 4/18/21
  • Shot 79-80 to finish with a score of 159 and in a tie for 32nd in a strong field of 60 players. Struggled with my long irons and club selection both days, something I am working hard to improve upon for my next tournament.
  • Camp/Event
  • MAJGT at Whitetail Ridge
  • 4/02/21 to 4/03/21
  • Shot 81-82 to finish with a score of 163 and place T-15 out of 41 players. Struggled with the putter and wedges this week, but I hit my irons and driver well in the cold and windy conditions.
  • Camp/Event
  • PM Stroke Play #19
  • Shot 78 to finish 3rd out of 31. I had a rough front nine shooting 42, but was proud of the way that I battled on the back nine, shooting 36 to give me a chance to win the tournament. With some larger tournaments coming up, my main focus is improving my game within 100 yards as well as my course management strategies.
