Bennett Espenshade '24 Recruiting Profile

My name is Bennett Espenshade, and I am a class of 2024 golfer from Baltimore, Maryland. I am passionate about golf and have the goal to play at the Division I level. I attend the Gilman School and I have been playing golf from a young age but only started taking it seriously 3 years ago with competition and regular lessons. I am coached by Sean English at my home course, Elkridge Club in Baltimore.

I love golf because I can always improve and do something better in my game. I really enjoy playing in team events for both my school and state and look forward to team golf in college. This past year, I competed at the #1 spot as a freshman for my new high school which was a blast. Although we had our season cut short in the playoffs, it was a great experience.

Thinking about strengths and areas for improvement in my game, I would say that a strength is ironplay. I love spending time on the range working the ball and hitting different yardages. This past year, I made some improvements to my putting, but I still have work left to do on that front. Overall, I played some solid golf last year that included 2 AJGA top 5’s and becoming the youngest men’s club champion at Elkridge Club. 

I am fortunate to attend Gilman School, which provides students with an outstanding education. It was a challenge to adjust to a new school as a freshman during Covid. However, playing on the golf team was a fun way to get to know upperclassmen and helped me adjust to a new environment during a very unusual year. When not playing golf, I enjoy the academic challenge of honors classes. I like to push myself on and off of the golf course by giving myself new goals, and effective time management has been key to balancing my busy golf and academic schedules.
