Playing golf has taught me many lessons that I have applied to life, including staying positive when faced with overwhelming challenges and perseverance through hard work and determination. One of these challenges included moving to three different states during elementary and middle school. I learned to adapt quickly in new surroundings and make new friends and relationships. Another more significant challenge I encountered was having to deal with multiple sport-related concussions. Each concussion was more difficult to recover from than the previous one. I learned to remain positive, patient, and most of all dedicated to the rehabilitation process in order to overcome these challenges and return to a high level of competition in sport and school.
I realized in my sophomore year of high school how much I enjoyed the game of golf and that I had good talent for the game. It was then that I decided that I wanted to play golf in college, and I slowly transitioned to concentrating solely on golf to maximize my training commitment and prepare for playing golf beyond high school. I have always enjoyed sports from a very young age, and I have had the opportunity to play many sports at a high level of competition. My experience with these other sports has helped me to better understand my body mechanics and has improved the way I swing the golf club. As a student athlete, I have learned to use great listening skills with my teachers and coaches to help me adapt quickly, and then easily transfer those lessons to my schoolwork and the golf course.
As much as sports have been a constant part of my life, academics have always been my number one focus and priority. My parents, who both have a Master’s degree in physical therapy, taught me from a young age the importance of a strong education with “grades first, and sports second.” Through this philosophy and using my talents in school, I have achieved high honor roll status throughout middle and high school while taking courses that continue to challenge me to succeed. I enjoy mathematics, analytics, and architecture, and I am planning to pursue a degree(s) in business and engineering in college.
