Hello, My name is Mason Smith and I am from El Paso, Texas. I have played golf since the age of 6, after my parents were looking for a sport that would work well with my ADHD. Originally, it was certainly a challenge to focus playing 9 holes, let alone 18. As I was growing up and learning to handle my ADHD, golf played a huge part in my understanding and working with it. Golf has taught my patience, control, learning from my mistakes, celebrating my accomplishments, but most importantly, learning to play on a team.
Now at the age of 16, my ADHD is completely under control. There are few places in the world I feel most at peace: the golf course, playing my cello, and with my family.
My academic studies come before everything else. I currently have a 4.1 GPA and am enrolled in the AP Algebra II online UTOnRamp program, AP English 3 and Physics this year. I am also in the honors orchestra program and joined the Chapin Mariachi this year. In my spare time I love to work with the Chapin Worklight Theatre Company, Chapin Student Council and I volunteer with the Braden Aboud Memorial Foundation.
I currently take private lessons from Jere Pelletier, golf pro, at the El Paso Country Club. I have traveled all over the United States competing in tournaments, but two highlights are the semi-finals of the Drive, Chip and Putt Championships (almost to the finals) and the US Kids Red, White and Blue Invitational at Pinehurst in North Carolina.
During my high school career, I plan on fine-tuning my golf game and hopefully play golf at the college level. I am still debating on my degree, as I am torn between music and psyhcology.
In closing, I think the most important thing that golf has given me is time with my family: my parents and my little sister. Because of golf, we have been able to travel, hang out and spend some great times together. For that, I'll be forever grateful.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for reading my profile. - Mason Smith
