Hello coaches,
My name is Mason Askew and I am a junior at Georgetown High School, in Georgetown, Tx. I have only been playing golf competitively for three years after my 8th grade year, however I have improved from shooting in the 100’s to mid-high 70’s. I am 5’10” and weigh 130 pounds.
I would like to play college golf because golf it is the ultimate life lesson sport. Not only can you play it your entire life, long after college is over, but the lessons golf teaches are lifelong. First, self discipline, unlike many other sports, it is just you vs. the course. You have to go out every day and grind. I have learned that putting the work on the course and off the course is the only way to get better and having self discipline is the only way that happens. Additionally, while you are competing against others you are more often competing against yourself, trying to get better every round but knowing this rarely happens. This can also be applied to life as there are ups and downs in life and as long as you are working hard to get better every day that things will work out. Golf has also taught me not to stress or fall apart if something bad happens. I have learned that I can have a bad hole but not to affect the rest of my round. Same thing in life, if something bad happens, I can bounce back and not let it affect my entire life. These are just a few of the valuable life lessons golf has taught me.
Currently, my GPA on a weighted ranking is 5.3 out of a possible 5.0. Education is a high priority for me as I would like to be a doctor. I would like to play at a university that has a strong pre-med, chemistry or biology program in order to accomplish my goals. I would also like to be a part of a strong team that competes to win tournaments and championships as my high school has been very competitive. I love being part of a team and understand that team chemistry is vital to a teams success and I know I can be an asset to a team. Additionally, I would love to be on a college golf team and travel around the country playing golf and representing my university with pride.
Finally, I am the oldest of three boys and my parents have been my biggest supporters and fans. My dad is in sales and my mom is an elementary teacher. They love watching me play and tell me often how proud they are of me. Playing college golf in front of my family and friends would be a highlight of my life and I look forward to the opportunity. I hope this has given y’all some insight into me as a person and golfer. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks y’all
Mason Askew
