Hello,
I am a 17-year-old boy from a small town on Vancouver Island. I am a very athletic and hard-working athlete; ever since I was young - even now - I barely have the chance to hang out with my friends because I am too busy training, getting ready for the next day or just relaxing. Even when I do hangout with friends, almost the whole time is spent playing sports; that’s just who I am. I love having fun, playing sports and most importantly - winning. I believe I owe thanks to my Aunt for giving me that winning desire; even when I was only five or six, she wouldn’t let me beat her in a card game, that is who she was - she hated losing - and I feel like I have adopted that trait and it’s now a part of me.
I’m a very dynamic hockey player who can learn and play any position required. I am a very skilled and fast skater, I am always impressing coaches and other players by my speed. In the past four years I’ve played defense for two and centre/left wing for the other two. I’ve played power plays and penalty kills both as defense and as forward which gives me a much better understanding than many other players at how to play a certain position. I’m also an excellent overtime and four-on-four player due to my speed and positional knowledge making me a very all around and versatile player able to play any position in any scenario.
Ever since the early age of five I have loved hockey. My favourite team is of course my Dad's hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens. Watching games with my Dad almost every day after school, shooting pucks in the garage between periods, I have always been obsessed with hockey. Early morning practices, roller hockey, camping trips, school, vacation, and family gatherings, my obsession follows me everywhere. Talking about the game, watching the game, practicing the game, playing the game. It has always followed me.
In Canada it is common for kids to have played pond hockey, or at least played on an outdoor rink. I have never played hockey on an outdoor rink, or even skated on a frozen lake or pond. As a Canadian I’m sad to admit this fact, but it’s true. Unfortunately, where I live it doesn’t usually get cold enough for ice to properly freeze, and the few places it does are very out of the way. One winter, at the age of thirteen, I decided I would give it a shot; I would attempt to build a small outdoor rink. So, I did my research, made sure I had the necessary equipment, and went to work. I carried some pieces of wood we had under our deck, grabbed nails from our basement, “borrowed” more nails from my neighbour, grabbed my hammer and got to work. Once finished the outline I laid three tarps that I had crafted into a singular tarp over my rink Finally, after several failed attempts and hours and days on end of hard work, I finally succeeded and completed my homemade rink. I then filled it with water and waited for it to freeze. After days of waiting, my rink finally froze. Unfortunately, due to the slope of the rink and tiny holes in the tarps, my rink only froze in a tiny corner. Only enough to stickhandle on. After all was said and done, I sure was disappointed with the result, but it was fun and interesting to see how far my passion could take me. Building all of it by myself, all for the love of the game. It really showed me how focused I can be when invested in something, working on it non-stop until it is done. Even after that year's failure, I still tried the following year but to no avail. Hopefully this year, now that I have my driver’s license, I can check pond hockey off my bucket list.
I believe that after being a full-time high school student athlete, missing classes three times a week for hockey, and still getting the grades I do, I am a perfect candidate for NCAA schools and a perfect candidate for NCAA Hockey. As I aspire to take my passion and talent to an NCAA institution I thank you for your time and patience given to me and look forward to talking to you.
